Well I am finally ready to go the next step with Wordpress. I have just seen the new release of Wordpress, version 2.6 has been released and I am holding my breath as I upgrade my biggest blog from version 2.3.3 up to 2.6.

I am looking at this as the second step, maybe the 2.0 version of Wordpress 2.5. I put 2.5 on a couple of my blogs including this one but did not like the look of the interface as much as I liked Wordpress 2.3 so I waited. I am now very happy with the release candidate of Wordpress 2.6 that I have been using throughout the day on one of my blogs so i am confident in my being an early adopter of the software.

Before I have done the upgrade though I did a full backup. I grabbed a Wordpress backup plugin and did a backup of the files to the server and also did a backup of my local files to my desktop.

Better safe than sorry I guess.

Firefox 3 as we all know is now super quick at loading pages. But there is always room ofr improvement and best of all since Firefox is open source software there is a lot of ways that you can mod the app.

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit enter. You will get a warning about changing settings but we are not doing anything too radical so it is OK. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 8. This means it will make 8 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Just reading Robert Scoble and his fears of the internet becoming a closed entity by buying yahoo search and then Facebook. Not sure if I agree with his conclusions but here is how he lays it out.

Microsoft buys Yahoo search and has a big search engine, then walks down the street (they are both in Silicon Valley I am guessing) and buys Facebook. Facebook is closed to Google so Google can’t index any of the Facebook content and then the Facebook part of the internet is closed to only the Microsoft search engine Msnyahoolive! or whatever they end up calling it.

Scoble wants to start an online protest and start using friendfeed as a Facebook alternative.

OK, so there is the scenario as Robert puts it up there. I know that Robert knows way more than me about the search engine wars past and present and he knows all ofthe players at the tops of these companies so I have to think that he is not just paranoid. I am not sure though that this is the biggest problem to worry about. Read the rest of this entry »

So Microsoft is nice and civil in saying that the deal is dead. There were talks this weekend between Steve Ballmer with Microsoft and Jerry Yang with Yahoo. There is apparently a difference of Microsoft willing to go to $33 per share and Yahoo only accepting $37 a share.

So they are close but not close enough. Steve Ballmer does not look like he will bother trying to steal Yahoo by buying up all the shares so I have to wonder what Microsoft is thinking.

Is Microsoft really just walking away? Are they looking at some other companies? Some people have said that Microsoft should go after Ask.com or AOL but they are not really in need of marketshare, what Microsoft really needs is online apps and the love of web users.

This next week should be interesting. If Steve Ballmer has some kind of deal in his back pocket I am sure we will see it soon. I feel bad for those stockholders of Yahoo, I would imagine the shares will plummet on Monday morning.

Stay tuned for all of the news. I know that I am watching Tech Crunch close as they broke this story before anyone.

We were talking in the office today about how Blackberry email service wesnt down yesterday but the phone themselves still worked. Those phones are rock solid they have been around for 50 years.

This made me wonder about email. Email has been around since 1971 according to this page.  Of course before that there was text messaging, people could send a message around to other users on the same computer since the early 60’s(remember there were no PCs at that time).

So thinking back, I have been using email since about 1992 when I was on BBSs but I was wondering when all of the emailing between people started and found this quote buried in the email article on Wikipedia:

In 1988, Vint Cerf arranged for an interconnection of MCI Mail with NSFNET on an experimental basis. The following year Compuserve e-mail interconnected with NSFNET. Within a few years the commercial traffic restriction was removed from NSFNETs AUP, and NSFNET was privitized.

So maybe 1988 is really when “internet” email got started although there was probably a few before that that I am having trouble finding.

It looks like there is a strange vacuum in the history of email that was not documented because it did not seem overly important at that time.

macbook airYes I was checking on on the Steve Jobs webcast today from the MacWorld conference. There are few things that excite me as much as MacWorld and the fact is I own no Apple products. Well today that may have changed as I saw pics of this super new super thin MacBook Air. The newest laptop weighs 3 pounds and is thing enough to fit in an interoffice envelope.

The guy from Intel was there saying the the Core 2 Duo is smaller then ever and is now the size of a dime and thick as a nickel. That is a lot of power with a tiny footprint. The MacBook Air also sports a small 1.8 inch hardrive and is not really too expensive at $1799.

The only trouble is that I have no overarching reason to buy a new laptop as great as this thing is. I will have to see later this year if one just appears in my kitchen after a weak moment online at the MacStore.

Wow that was tough but I in fact got a little bit of luck and one of the guys that I work with ran across a Wii. The family will be excited on Christmas morning, hell I am excited. But there are a few take aways that I hope will help others.

First make sure that you are looking online for what is available and when and where. I looked for my Wii here in Canada at  Console Watch. Console Watch keeps updating the major online stores every 30 seconds so when there is a chance that using that site that you can run into an online deal.

Next was definitely Red Flag Deals. Red Flag has all sorts of deals and conversations in their forums. sign up and you can get tips on where the Wii is here in Canada.

Finally getting to know that managers in the various stores and you may be able to get a call from a friendly EB Games or  WalMart or even Shoppers Drug mart video department manager

Good luck to everyone looking for a Wii this Christmas. I hope the damn scalpers don’t end up profiting on this great game device this Christmas.

Well the kids have decided that they want a Wii this Christmas. I was able to avoid it last year even though I was involved with the searches of a few people and with all of that craziness, but now I guess I will have to get involved with the lunacy that is Wii shopping here in Canada.

If you did not know it already, I live in Calgary and have never had to personally go through this “Hot Christmas Toy” shopping so if anyone has any Wii shopping tips for me I would really appreciate it. I will try to track my shopping and give as many hints as possible over the next few days and weeks

Well if you are just visiting for the first time or just suprised by what you see I have indeed changed this blog to run on Wrodpress instead of my trusty old Movable Type.

I have enjoyed my years running Movable Type but with the 4.0 upgrade I could not get pages to recompile properly. I kept getting 500 errors and could not write a post without a couple of rebuilds and had no luck in finding a fix so I went out and downloaded, installed, imported, and swapped folders and tada, here I am in Wordpress.

All of the links should still work. If not let me know!

Not a big fan. I have just this week switched to what seems to be a great upgrade of Microsoft Office 2007.

One thing however that I do not like is the font that looks like clear type all by itself in Outlook. I have changed back from Segoe UI to my old Tahoma that I am already used to.

Do you want Tahoma back? Just go to tools to options and find the following
segoe.jpg

Now in the advanced options just go to the Appearance options in the middle of the box and set your own font (my choice as you can see is

Tahoma 8pt
