Today I woke up to my Blackberry 8703 sitting with a white screen saying JVM 523 error reset. This was not a good start to the day. I fought with this error across my laptop and the internet for hours today and hope to save you hours trying to fix this.

One of the big problems with the newer Blackberry units is that there is no reset button. Everytime I tried to reset the damn thing I would watch as it would boot up and just as I was about to put in the password - flash - the JVM 523 error would come back.

So now that I have fixed it I will tell you how to get your blackberry up and running again. first of all know that you will lose all the data on the blackberry so if you have no backup, sorry, you will now have a clean slate to work with. Fortunatly I am on a BES server so this is not a big deal to me. OK, now that you know that your data is gone….letting it sink in there….you will be able to rescue your connectivity to the world in two steps with two pieces of data. OK here goes…

1. Download the latest Blackberry Handheld device software. I did a Google search for 8703e handheld device software bell (I use a Bell as my service provider) and then do the install. This will just install to your hard drive which is fine.

2. Download the javaloader.zip file. I decided to host it here in case I have this problem again. extract the javaloader.exe file to the root of your c: drive.

3. Now that you have this javaloader thingy it is time to run it and wipe your blackberry. Open a command prompt and go to the root of C: and run the javaloader with the following command javaloader -usb wipe and hit enter. You will be prompted by the javaloader for your password and then after the 10 second or so wipe you can reboot your Blackberry and it will come up with a blank screen.

4. Run your Blackberry Desktop software and do an application install selecting the core applications and now after a short time of loading you should get to reboot the Blackberry and you will be back in business.

Hope this helps but if not try going over to here. Where lots of poeple are fighting the same fight and may have more help that you may need.

    1. The JVM 523 is not as simple as that, although I am glad you were able to fix it rather easily. For those who are freaked out about losing all your info (as I was) don’t be and don’t listen to all those who tell you to forget it, theres no way to retrieve your info etc. It’s a computer, there is a way. If this phone belonged to Osama I am willing to bet you they CAN get ALL the data from the phone.
I refused to listen to the Verizon tech who told me there is no way to save the info.
Rule # 1 keep trying to reboot.
Whenever I would start up my Blackberry 8703e I would get the error so I Pulled out the battery and left it out for a few min (or longer). When I then reinserted the battery I would sometimes get a few min before the error returned. If during those few min you are able to change the Theme to the generic one that was the default when you received the phone you should be able to buy yourself enough time to do a backup. (HINT: if you are getting the error whenever you highlight a particular icon try skipping it by holding the alt key when scrolling).
Verizon sent me 2 phones to replace the one having the error (idiots) but after I did the restore onto the new phone the new phone started exhibiting the same problem. Verizon had me do a software upgrade for the phone but the phone started getting the error sooner. I hate Blackberry, wish I had my old Treo 700.

    2. Just fixed the error on a 7130e by uninstalling and reinstalling my mail accounts for Yahoo and Google on the BlackBerry web site after reading that an icon could cause the problem (they were the only non-original icons on the machine and I had renewed the email forwards using the earlier today because the Blackberry had stopped receiving mail on Jan 1 and presumably one of the new icons had caused a problem.

    3. I have had an error 523 on 3 att phones now and i am so upset as each time i have to get a new phone as att do not have their software available for customers to re-install. I use mac and all the recovery software is for windows PC so please if anyone knows how to help a mac user recover from this awful error please help!!!!

      Thank u kindly in advance.

    4. Forgot to mention i have a 8310 curve.

    5. Thomas Renner says:

I found how to get rid of this MUCH easier.

Once you get the Radio turned off ( a must to get through anything else as this is a sync issue and radio much be off. Alternatively maybe sync with cable disables all data downloads might work.), do the following:

Go to the Blackberry Browser and under Browser Channels delete all channels in there.
Also set the Theme back to the generic one that came with your device.
Turn the radio back on and see what happens.

Mine has been working for 2 days now without issue. Before a new 7130e device (yea I know it is older but no upgrade through my company for another 3 months) did not help. First sync with my Lotus Notes server did the JVM 523 error again.
