This is about a home PC - a 6 year old HP that we leave plugged in and in standby. We unplugged our power strip before leaving on a 10 day vacation because we'd just experienced a rare thunder & lightening storm. When we returned and plugged in the power strip, the PC crackled and spat at us. The printer and monitor were fine, but the PC never turned back on. What probably caused this and how can we prevent this in our new Dell?

It is amazing how many years this checklist has been kicked around by different IT people online. You may want to edit the Windows 95 and 98 into XP and Vista, otherwise nothing else has really changed on it overly much. Probably why it is still such a keeper for the basics.
